Tonight I watched 20/20 after working out. I have to say that program is one of my favorites. I love the versatility and I find it refreshing to. It can do a show on a murder one week and then the next do one on the end of the world and what might happen. It has a tendency to make you think...
Tonight it was about money and our society. They interviewed a former anchor man who was once at the top of his game in the news industry. He was eventually laid off. After the shock and humiliation faided it seems he truley found himself. He became a veternairy technician making aaround 30 thousand a year versus the 250,000.00 he had previously been making. His wife did seem a little bitter about not being able to go and purchase those 300.00 boots on a whim as she used to do. He however seemed happy with his new phase in life.
The second segment was about college. They speculated that it was a rip off. That it is our society giving the bachlor degree so much clout. They interviewed people unable to get a job or getting jobs making what they could have made without going to college. They mentioned the high dollar outstanding debt, for some in the 75,000.00 range. They touched on going to trade school which doesn't have as much statis attached. It seems the trade school people in the segment of the show actually made out better with no debt after school. It comes down to the fact that yes for some college is not a good deal. If you are majoring in social work for example and are going to graduate with 60,000.00 dollars worth of student loan debt it doesn't make much sense to go to college to get a job that maybe makes 30,000 a year. However if you are going to college to be a lawyer or doctor it makes more sense. Being at the bottom 40 percent of your class statistically meant you probably wouldn't graduate from college. They also touched on the fact that those that are successful would have been with or without the degree.
It was very interesting. After watching it I had a whole new perspective. Thank god not everyone wants the same thing in life. We need the plumbers and mechanics just as much as the accountants, doctors and lawyers. Its all about happiness in the end anyway. Fullfilment is key. The most important thing to keep in mind is you are not what you do for a living. It is only an extension of who you are. Your lifestyle is not who you are either and all to often people identify with it way to much. The question to ask is if it were all taken away the job the money who would you be? Would you still be happy striped to the very core of your existence.
